Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning facilitates and enhances quality teaching, student learning, and excellence in the workplace. It empowers professionals to address challenges while fostering the scholarship of teaching and student service. Scholarship incorporates the reading of relevant literature and conducting systematic classroom investigations for the study of teaching and learning within a supportive academic community. The center uses faculty and staff feedback to design and implement an ongoing professional development system for all faculty and staff at Parkland College. The major strands of programming include Classroom Assessment and Research, Mentoring program, New Full-Time Faculty Orientation, Significant Learning Course Design, Respectful Workplace Training, seminars, workshops, discussions, and other all-college initiatives.

All professional development opportunities are announced through Parkland’s e-mail system. The Center for Excellence also maintains a library of resources for interested faculty and staff around the topics of teaching and learning issues, diversity, and professional development growth. The associate vice president teaching and learning adn the professional development coordinator work with input from faculty, staff, adminstration, and the PCA Professional Development Committee to facilitate the award-winning professional development program. Professional development funds are administered by the Center for Excellence and are available on a limited basis to administrators, full-time faculty, part-time faculty, and staff.

The Distance and Virtual Learning unit within the Center for Excellence provides Angel training and technical support for faculty in online and hybrid courses. The technical services specialist supports the various platforms used and can also aid in online course design and technology questions. Faculty and students can direct questions to the director of Distance and Virtual Learning. The Parkland television channel, PCTV, is also a resource for the community, faculty, and student learning. Cobravision is the in-house video system available for college-wide announcements.
