Registration Procedure
Assessment and Registration
Before new students can register for classes, their reading, writing, and mathematics skills must be assessed. See Comprehensive Assessment Policy (CAP). Based upon assessment results and in consultation with an advisor or counselor, students then select and reserve courses. All degree-seeking students are required to attend S.O.A.R. — Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration. Registration is complete upon payment of tuition and fees..
Registration Guidelines
Under no circumstances will a student be allowed to register for a class once the midterm date for that class has passed. Faculty members are required to refer students attending classes who are not on the 10th day or midterm rosters to the Office of Admissions and Records.
Students not on the 10th day rosters will be advised accordingly: if the midterm date for that particular class has not passed, students must obtain permission from the department chair to register. If the midterm date for the class has passed, students will not be allowed to register and will no longer be able to attend the class.
As part of its efforts to increase students’ success, Parkland College requires that students who assess into developmental classes register before the first day of class in order to begin classes that semester. Students who want to enroll after classes have already begun will be helped through the admission and registration process for the following semester.
Auditing a Class
Students planning to audit a class may register for that class on a space-available basis at the beginning of the late registration period. Students must meet the admission requirements of the college and the course prerequisites and pay the same tuition and fees as students enrolled for credit; however, the late fee is waived. Once registered, a student may not change from audit to credit status or vice versa. Students who are Monetary Award Program recipients should be sure to check with the Office of Financial Aid before signing up to audit a course.
Parkland Connection
Parkland College’s Internet-based system, Parkland Connection, is available for students to register and obtain information from their computerized files even when the campus offices are closed. Students may register, see their class schedule, check for course availability, inquire about their current balance, pay their tuition by credit card, and check their grades. Parkland Connection may be accessed online at www.parkland.edu/parklandconnection. (The registration and drop options will not be available at all times.)
Students who have been admitted may access the system by entering their student identification number and personal identification number (PIN). Anyone may access the systems to check course availability without these security measures. The PIN is a 5-digit number students assign to their records the first time they enter the system. It is the student’s responsibility to protect his or her PIN. Misuse of a PIN is prohibited in the Parkland College Student Conduct Code by Article II: Proscribed Conduct. Should the PIN be lost or forgotten, the student must come to the Office of Admissions and Records and present a valid student I.D. card and one other form of picture identification in order to have their PIN reset. PINs will not be reset by telephone or e-mail. For further information on Parkland Connection, call 217/353-2638.
Students are responsible for knowing and understanding academic policies and procedures, program requirements, and course prerequisites contained in the Parkland class schedule and the Parkland College catalog and to make inquiries if they have questions. Students also are expected to follow the recommendations of their counselors and/or academic advisors.
Student Responsibility
Students bear full responsibility for any complications that arise because of their failure to follow established policies, procedures, course requirements and prerequisites, or the advice of counselors or academic advisors. The college does not consider lack of student awareness as sufficient reason to waive any requirement or make exception to any policy or practice.
Class Schedule Information
Detailed registration procedures are described in the Parkland College class schedule published for each semester. Students are responsible for becoming familiar with all dates, deadlines, and procedures related to registration.
