Excellence in Athletics and Academics

Did you know that Parkland College has some of the best teams in the state? Our teams feature top recruits in Illinois and the Midwest. We play some of the best and we win. We also help our athletes win academically. The Cobras are awesome — for the athletes and fans alike. Plus, performance-based scholarships are available in all of our men’s and women’s sports.

Parkland athletic teams have had unmatched success both on and off the court. Over the past five years five different teams (Baseball, Golf, Softball, Volleyball, and Women’s Basketball) have all qualified for NJCAA National Tournaments. The Men’s Baseball and Softball teams have each made three trips to nationals, with Baseball winning the title in 2009 and 2002 while the Softball team was the National Runner-up that same season. The Women’s Volleyball team won the national title in 1999 and the Women’s Basketball team qualified for the first time ever in 2004. The Men’s Basketball team won the national title in 1986 and went to nationals in 1988, 1989, and 1994. Parkland has won at least four of the eight Collegiate Conference of Central Illinois titles over the past four seasons. Academically, Parkland student-athletes continue to do well in the classroom, with 11 athletes earning Academic All-American Honors last year and the Softball and Women’s Basketball programs being recognized nationally as being among the best in their sports academically.

Our Student-Athlete Success Strategy
We strive to give student athletes the resources needed to fulfill these expectations. In cooperation with Parkland's Student Support Services unit, the Athletics department implements a complete success strategy program with each student athlete, to develop him or her as a whole person. This strategy, along with our Total Education and Monitoring System (T.E.A.M.S.), assists us in providing our student athletes with a positive learning environment while at Parkland. In addition, our academic advisor for athletes works with student athletes and their parents in unique ways. The advisor... oversees the parent/athlete orientation that all recruited athletes at Parkland must attend;

  • arranges informational seminars throughout the school year on such topics as nutrition, alcohol and drug abuse, and study skills;
  • helps students athletes with early registration, tracks and monitors their degree progress, and gives them access to career counseling; and
  • keeps in close contact with each athlete and his or her coach to improve or maintain performance in the classroom.

Parkland College faculty, staff, coaches, trainers, managers, academic advisors, counselors, and administrators collaborate to assist students who face the demands of both academics and athletics. Our student athletes have to meet three main expectations: to compete at the highest level possible on the field, to maintain high academic standards, and to represent Parkland College in a respectful, positive manner, both on and off the field.

Parkland Athletic Scholarships
Parkland offers tuition and fee scholarships in all of our men's and women's sports. Facilities
Our award-winning campus and beautiful grounds are the home of first-rate athletics facilities. They include soccer, baseball and softball fields, track, tennis courts, a 2000-plus-seat gym that includes a fitness center. Students enjoy living in the Big-Ten community of Champaign-Urbana for the sports and social and cultural life. Most Parkland athletes live in one of the apartment complexes geared especially for students. The ‘twin cities’ of C-U are two hours from Indianapolis, three hours from St. Louis, and about an hour from Bloomington-Normal.

Call 217/351-2226 or visit us and you’ll find Parkland College offers excellence in athletics and academics.
