Rochester High School all-state soccer player T.J. Keys will play next season for Parkland College in Champaign.
The Cobras get a forward who scored 84 career goals, 44 as a senior, was named to the Chicago Tribune honorable mention all-state team and led Rochester to third-place finishes at the Class A state tournament in 2006 and 2007. McKendree University and Lincoln Land Community College also made Keys’ final list.
“I picked Parkland because it’s a two-year school and I kind of wanted to get out of Springfield,” he said. “I want to pursue engineering and Parkland has an engineering program and so does the University of Illinois, so if I decide not to play soccer after the two years at Parkland I can always go there.”
Keys is one of several local players headed to Parkland. Coach Mark Sikora first spotted Keys and fellow signee Alex Drawve, a Pleasant Plains senior, playing for a Chatham-based club team called the Raiders in a summer tournament.
Drawve played forward and midfielder, then spent the final quarter of the high school season at the fullback position. He scored 14 goals and had eight assists for the Cardinals.
Springfield sweeper Chris Faller and midfielder Matt Larison also have signed with Parkland.
“I’m excited about playing at the next level,” Faller said.
Larison was the Senators’ second-leading scorer in the fall with eight goals.
“I saw Parkland play Lincoln Land here in town and I liked what I saw,” Larison said.
