Former University of Illinois and Champaign Central standout, Nate Mast, enters his third year as head coach for the men's basketball program at Parkland College. After his two seasons at the helm of the Cobras, Mast was able to get the program back to its winning tradition by turning a first year record of 12-18 into a second year winning record of 22-13, including a trip to the DII NJCAA National Tournament, Parkland's first trip in 17 years.
Mast, a 2002 graduate of the University of Illinois played basketball for the Fighting Illini for four seasons (1997-2001)-three seasons for Lon Kruger and one season under Bill Self. At Illinois, Mast was a two time recipient of the Kenny Battle Most Inspirational Player Award. He was part of three Big 10 championship teams and helped guide the Illini to the NCAA Elite 8 during his senior year.
A four year letterman, Mast holds the UI scoring record for walk-ons. He played in 72 games, including four starts and was named to the Big 10 Academic All-Conference team. Mast was a student assistant coach for one season at Illinois (2001-2002) and later joined Bill Self's staff at Kansas in 2004. While at Kansas, the Jayhawks won three Big 12 conference championships and advanced to the Elite 8.
Following Kansas, Mast took his first assitant coaching job at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Mast was in charge of monitoring player academics, player development, strength training, recruiting, scouting and film exchange among other responsibilities. Mast helped the Lions to a record of 51-13 over two seasons as well as a Bi-State East Conference Championship in 2008.
Mast, who was inducted into the Champaign Central Hall of Fame in 2008, is married to the former Ashley Seaman of Champaign, and the couple has two kids, Nolan (3) and Kendall (1).
“Last year was a great experience for our program, our school, and our community by returning to the national stage. Our goal is to continue to work in all areas of player, team, and personal development so at the end of the day these young men have the best chance to be successful at Parkland and beyond."--Nate Mast
Dustin Yoder
Assistant Coach
• Office: P204
• Telephone: 217/373-3757
Dustin Yoder enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Parkland College men’s basketball program. Yoder, a former local area stand out at both the high school and junior college level, comes to Parkland after working three years at the University of Illinois under head coach Bruce Weber. Yoder will be assisting head coach Nate Mast with recruiting, player development, practice scheduling and organization, scouting, and daily basketball operations among other things.
As a 2011 graduate in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois, Yoder spent the last three seasons aiding the men’s basketball program on the U of I campus under Bruce Weber. In the 2010-2011 season, Yoder served as the team’s head manager. It is here where he was given the opportunity to work closely with the daily basketball operations of the entire coaching staff.
Duties included assisting with scouting report drafting with coaches, organizing equipment (used for practice, road trips, and games both home and away), working with the video coordinator in team scouts/film editing and exchange, administering and overseeing fifteen other floor and video managers, and constructing a weekly schedule to ensure orderliness in the program.
Prior to the University of Illinois, Yoder attended Lake Land College in Mattoon, IL from 2006-2008. He was a two year letter winner in men’s basketball playing for the likes of Jim Dudley and current Lake Land coach Cedric Brown. In Yoder’s first year he served as the team’s sixth man. Unfortunately, Yoder’s sophomore season was cut short due to an ACL/MCL tear which led to season ending surgery.
Yoder attended Okaw Valley High School in Bethany, IL. At Okaw Valley he finished with fourteen varsity letters, and still remains as Okaw Valley’s all time leading scorer in basketball (1,527 pts). Dustin is the son of Norm and Cindy Yoder.
“I don’t believe I could have found a better situation to begin my coaching career than Parkland College. With the incredible support given to the athletic department by the college and the community, combined with the experience and basketball IQ of Coach Mast, I believe that my progression as a coach will only continue to improve.”—Dustin Yoder
