Golf team comes up short at DACC Invite

Lewis and Clark put up back to back under 300 rounds, the only team to do so for the tourney, as they cruised to an impressive win at the Danville Area CC Invite at Turtle Run Golf Course in Danville. The Trailblazers were led by medalist Devlin Keenoy who fired a 36-hole total of 141 to win by 4 strokes. L&C won the team title by 11 strokes over Rend Lake and 19 over 3rd place Parkland.

For the Cobras, freshman David Keenan continued his steady play this fall by finishing 4th over-all with a two-day total of 147 (75-72), just six strokes behind the winner. Lewis Martin also played well finishing with at 148 (77-71). The only other Cobra who kept both rounds under 80 was freshman Brady Welsh who fired a 157 (79-78).

PC will play in their last tournament of the fall this Wednesday and Thursday at the 54 hole Ancilla College Invite. The tournament is being held at Swan Lake Golf Resort in Plymouth, Indiana, home of the 2012 NJCAA D-2 Golf National Championships.

Former Cobra Golfer sets school record at IUPUI

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The IUPUI men's golf team fired a school record 843, solidified by a final round 281 on Saturday as the Jaguars placed third among 18 teams competing at The McLaughlin at the par-70 Bethpage Red Course. West Florida won the tournament at 828 and TCU was one shot back at 829. IUPUI finished a comfortable 10 shots in front of host St. John's, but never really challenged for the team title.

"The boys played well. I'd rate it maybe a six or seven out of 10. It was just a few things here and there, but overall, they were very steady," assistant coach Colby Huffman said. "There were lots of pars and just not a lot of birdies. I think this week we're going to work on our birdie production, but it's hard to complain after setting a school record."

Senior Michael Davan (Parkland College) continued his brilliant start to the season, posting a school record 4-under 206 (68-69-69) to tie for third overall. The Illinois-native was the only player among the 92-player field to finish all three rounds under par. For the year, Davan has been under par in seven of his nine rounds and lowered his stroke average to 70.33 on the young season. He beat his previous best 54-hole score by seven shots and knocked off Michael Powell's school record by two strokes.

"Davan had a nice tournament," Huffman said. "He's ready to keep going low. He's got a lot to work on from 100 yards and in, but he's playing really well."

Powell played well this week as well, tying for 11th overall with a 1-under 209 (71-68-70) while sophomore Jose Pablo Segurola tied for 20th with a 3-over 213 (72-70-71).

"Jose looked good. Powell looked good," Huffman said. "They were steady. It was a day where we needed a good, hot stretch from someone and it never really happened. We needed three or four birdies in a row from someone to get us going."

Senior Ben Engle rebounded from a rocky Friday with a final round 71 and Philip Wirkkala closed at 221.

West Florida's Carlos Rodriguez was brilliant throughout, carding an incredible 199 to earn medalist honors. An honorable mention Division II All-American a year ago, Rodriguez was at 129 entering Saturday's final round before finishing with a 70.

IUPUI will now head home for two weeks of practice before taking part in the Butler Fall Invitational at Highlands Country Club in Indianapolis on Oct. 3-4.

"The key when we get home is to really do some evaluation and see if we can't get a better feel for what they need to work on," Huffman said. "They've got a good enthusiasm though, which is a good thing."

Golf finishes respectable 8th at Transylvania University Invitational

The Parkland College Golf team shot a respectable 36 hole total of 598 (303-295) to finish in 8th place out of 15 teams at the Transylvania University Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky. The Cobra were the only two-year college in a field of NCAA D-2, D-3, and NAIA programs. The University of Wisconsin-Stout edged out the host school by just two strokes to win the team title, while Bellarmine University was just four strokes off the pace. PC was just one stroke behind Otterbein University for 7th.

TU's Justin Tereshko won the medalist honors firing a 137 (68-69) to beat back Ethan Schmitz and Dan Nelson of UW-Stout who both shot 140. Parkland's Tyler Schmutz had an outstanding tournament finishing in a tie for 6th place at 144 (73-71). Other Parkland scores included Brady Welsh 149 (76-73), Lewis Martin 152 (78-74), David Hermes 155 (78-77), and David Keenan 158 (76-82).

Parkland will be off until September 25-26 when they will compete at the John A Logan Invitational in Marion, Il.

Parkland Golf 3rd at Rend Lake Invite

Freshman David Keenan fired a 36 hole total of 148 (72-76), good enough for a 4th place finish, which helped pace the Parkland College Golf team to a 3rd place finish at the Rend Lake Invitational held at Franklin County Country Club on Friday. Keenan finished just three strokes behind medalist Aaron Bravick (Lincoln) who finished at 145 (74-71). Host Rend Lake (594) won the Invite by shooting a 296 on the final 18, the lowest team score on the day, edging John A Logan (598) and the Cobras (601) for the title.

Parkland sophomores Lewis Martin (72-76 148) and Tyler Schmutz (79-73 152) finished 2-3 for the Cobras while freshman Brady Welsh (76-77 153) also played well. PC will be off until traveling to Kentucky Sept 8-10 for the Transylvania University Invitational.
