Celebration and Service-Learning

One of several important steps towards successfully implement community service into academic learning is finding the time to celebrate, after our students' completion of service, the important work they do as members of our classes and organizations. Celebration is a way that recognizes and makes real the positive effects their work can have on the community. Thus, in addition to providing popcorn and Pepsi, why not also present your students with a classy certificate that highlights their work throughout the semester. Simply check in with the friendly folks at the Student Life Office (X161) to learn more, and help celebrate the important contributions our students make for our community.

Service-Learning at Parkland College

Curious of how instructors at Parkland are bridging community service and academic learning? Here are a just a few of the many partnerships that Parkland instructors have made with the community:

*    Dental Hygiene students helped members of the community with their dental needs at the Francis Nelson Community Health Center.

*    Students in MS Network Management (CSC 159) assisted with the computer needs of the Center for Women in Transition, located in Champaign.

*    Students in the first year of the Occupational Therapy Program worked in conjunction with a variety of organizations, such as Carle Arbors, CU Special Recreation, and Lincoln's Challenge.

*    Students enrolled in Education 101 observed and volunteered in various area public schools, along with the Swan Special Care Center, located in Champaign.

Local Organizations Looking for Partnerships with Parkland Classes

*    The Octave Chanute Museum in Rantoul is looking to partner with Parkland classes. The Museum is "dedicated to collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting aviation and aerospace artifacts." They are open to a variety of different opportunities for our students.

*    Project Read, located right here on the campus of Parkland College, is looking for volunteer literacy tutors. Working one-on-one with adult students, along with assisting teachers in a variety of classes, volunteers help provide basic literacy, math, and ESL instruction to the members of Parkland's district.

*    Crisis Nursery is looking for volunteers to work under the direct supervision of Crisis Nursery staff and assist in recreational and house activities that enhance the quality of life and safety of the children in the nursery.

CIT 230: A Closer Look at S-L in a Construction Course

This semester, students in Greg Walburg's Field Experience in Construction course (CIT 230) traveled south to Louisiana to actively assist in the rebuilding efforts from Hurricane Katrina. In partnership with a local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, Greg's students not only worked on the construction of several new homes, but also helped lead and instruct non-Parkland volunteers with the completion of the homes. Thus, the students had the opportunity to not only gain valuable work experience in their field, but they also were making an important contribution to our country.  Great work Greg!
