Course Placement

Course placement is based on standardized test scores that are no more than three years old.

For placement into ENG 101, a student needs to meet one of the following:

  • ACT test: English score of 20 or higher.
  • SAT test: Writing score of 470 or higher.  
  • Placement essay reviewed by a composition faculty. Students whose English placement scores are between 50 and 89  have the option to write a placement essay.
  • Completing ENG 099 with a B or higher.

For placement into ENG 102, a student needs to meet one of the following:

  • Students who earn a score of 4 or 5 on either the Advanced Placement English Language and Composition Exam or the Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition Exam receive credit for ENG 101 and qualify for ENG 102.
  • Students who take the CLEP College Composition Modular exam, earn at least a 50, and write an essay evaluated as College Level 1 receive proficiency credit for ENG 101 and qualify for ENG 102.
  • Completing ENG 101 with a C or higher.

For placement into ENG 106, a student needs to meet one of the following:

  • ACT English score of 25 or higher and an ACT Reading score of 25 or higher.
  • SAT Writing score of 570 or higher.

For placement into ESL 101, a student needs to meet one of the following:

  • ESL Writing Sample after achieving ESL placement scores on the Listening, Reading, and Grammar sections; writing sample reviewed by an ESL composition faculty.
  • ESL Writing Sample after achieving a score of 500 or higher on the paper-based TOEFL or 60 or higher on the internet-based TOEFL; writing sample reviewed by an ESL composition faculty.
  • Completing ESL 099 with a C or higher.
  • Students who have inappropriately taken ENG 099 and have passed the class may take ESL 101 with special permission.

Note: Parkland does not accept other types of standardized ESL test scores, including IELTS scores and scores from Institutional TOEFL exams or intensive English programs. The only exception is that scores from UIUC’s Intensive English Institute (IEI) are accepted as long as the scores are no more than two years old.

For placement into ESL 102, a student needs to meet one of the following:
  • Completing ESL 101 with a C or higher.
  • Students who have inappropriately taken ENG 101 and have passed the class may take ESL 102 with special permission.

Note: Students may move from ENG 101 to ESL 102 or from ESL 101 to ENG 102 only with special permission.
