Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be a volunteer for the students to work on?
Not in a classroom setting. Massage classes are closed to individuals not accepted into the program and registered for the class. They are required to perform two massage homework assignments weekly. The students decide with whom they wish to practice their homework assignments on.

Is a student massage recommended for me?
Many conditions are either contraindicated for massage or out of the student’s scope of practice. These conditions include but are not limited to: pregnancy at any stage, contagious illnesses, recent surgeries, or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Clients must be 18 years or older.

How do I sign up for a massage?
Massage clinicals are held in March and April. The day AFTER Martin Luther King Day is our yearly WALK IN REGISTRATION. As the name implies, this event is WALK IN ONLY. The event begins at 11:00 am and ends at 7:00 pm to accommodate a larger number of individuals that would like to attend. The event will be held at the Parkland on Mattis, 1309 N. Mattis, Champaign, Room H128.

What if I cannot make it to the walk in registration?
If you are unable to attend the walk in registration, you can send a friend to sign you up. Each individual that attends the walk in registration will be allowed to sign up themselves and a friend DURING THE SAME DATE AND TIME SLOT that they choose.
Please note: individuals cannot register by phone or email.

What is the best way to cancel a scheduled Massage Clinical Appointment?
Massage appointments are scheduled in advance and unforeseen things may happen in while you may not be able to keep your scheduled appointment. If you are unable to keep your appointment please call Parkland on Mattis, 217/353-2760 to inform us at your earliest convenience. We will refer to our waiting list to fill your slot. We are unable to provide alternate appointments since the appointments fill in January. However, we can place individuals on a waiting list.

How do I become a Parkland Massage Therapy student?
If you are interested in being trained in massage therapy at Parkland College it is important to apply for the program in the admissions office by March 1st prior to the start of the fall semester you are interested in beginning for priority consideration. Individuals may apply to the program year round, keeping in mind they may be placed on an alternate list.

Interested in Parkland Students giving chair massages at an event?
Email the specifics surround your event during the spring and summer semester to teverett@parkland.edu. Students complete 15 hours of community outreach chair massages in the spring semester and 12 hours in the summer semester. Students do not participate in community outreach events in the fall. Events are posted and students decide which events they are interested in and fit their schedules. Thus, students will not attend all events.
