Parkland College: Celebrating 50 years

When Parkland College opened its doors to students in 1967, few could foresee the tremendous value our technical, career, and academic programs would hold for our district communities.

For 50 years, over 300,000 individuals have pursued their dream of a better life through higher education at Parkland. While many of these took their competitive training directly into the job market, others benefited from our affordable tuition and intimate class sizes before transferring to four-year institutions. Still others have taken a course or two here to enrich their professional and personal lives. Over the decades, Parkland has expanded its mission of engaging the community in learning to support people from all walks of life: from third‐grade College for Kids students to budding entrepreneurs wanting business skills training to older residents looking for ways to increase their mobility.

Our talented faculty and staff, efforts to upgrade and innovate curricula, and business and industry partnerships have made Parkland a proven leader and household name for skilled workforce training in our region. Our college has prepared thousands for successful careers that have strengthened the area's economy. As a recent economic impact analysis has shown, a 25-year-old Parkland graduate can expect to earn 61% more over his or her lifetime, on average, than a person not completing a community college degree or certificate. Parkland is also a major employer for our district, generating millions in local sales and over 1,200 jobs.

Parkland's half-century of dedication to student success and to offering accessible, affordable, and comprehensive education and training is well worth celebrating. Such a milestone not only presents the opportunity to commemorate Parkland's impact on our diverse communities, but offers us a chance to focus on the future of our mission, seeking greater community support as we forge ahead to serve you.

As we celebrate our 50th anniversary through the 2016-2017 academic year, I proudly invite you to join us in activities and events planned by the Parkland College Foundation, or to just stop by and take a walk around the campus to see just how much it has improved in 50 years. I also encourage you to visit the foundation website at www.parkland.edu/50years and share your stories about how Parkland and its programs have touched your life and the lives of those you love.
